I'm a bad fish keeper? Yahoo question and answer...

I'm a bad fish keeper?

I've recently setup a tank [40gallon] and the community in it was horrible as i didn't made any research on it. [please check out my profile and see the questions on this problem] . so i talked to my parents about it and they are telling me its fine they will survive you are more needy and as a fact there are no real plants in it. I wanted it to be more greenly and natural. but now its just abig tank with some big and sall fish, what should i do. infact Yahoo answers is my only hope now.

OK answering this may be difficult with the amount of info available. First what type of equipment do you have? Type of light and amount of them, for example T8 fluorescent, heater and size- if any, type of substrate and the dimensions of the tank, I know it's 40 gal but having a high or wide tank must also be considered. Also is this tank near to a window or not? I saw earlier that you wanted to create a planted tank that looks natural. For this I would suggest 2-3 watts of light per gallon as sufficient light is the single most important thing to grow plants, so about 80-120w will be needed. A stable temperature of about 26 degrees celsius depending on the plants and fish, and a type of very fine gravel/sand substrate. Also put your tank through a cycle before adding fish to it. Please google the nitrogen cycle in a fish tank. Please research any life organism before purchasing be it a plant, a fish or an invertebrate. I would also suggest starting from scratch. If you want to keep your angels stick to one mated pair with a cory catfish or two and some tetras. As far as plants go, choose two or three species that is suited to your tank's conditions. Choose plants of varying height as well to give depth and make it look natural, too many different species of plants and fish can make a tank look unnatural. Also add a piece or two of nice bogwood in the tank as this does not only look nice but add shelter for your fish. good luck and remember only bad things happen fast in a aquarium and RESEARCH, RESEARCH and RESEARCH!

Arowana Fish

One of the species arowana fish

Arowanas are freshwater bony fish of the family Osteoglossidae, also known as bonytongues. In this family of fishes, the head is bony and the elongate body is covered by large, heavy scales, with a mosaic pattern of canals. The dorsal and the anal fins have soft rays and are long based, while the pectoral and ventral fins are small. The name "bonytongues" is derived from a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth, the "tongue", equipped with teeth that bite against teeth on the roof of the mouth. The fish can obtain oxygen from air by sucking it into the swim bladder, which is lined with capillaries like lung tissue. The arowana is an "obligatory air breather".
